MODALITIES 2008 WORKSHOP SERIES
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE and MYOFASCIAL RELEASE II • Instructors: Art Riggs, CMT Saturday-Sunday April 5, 6, 12, 13, & 19, from 9 am-6 pm, 40 Credit Hours; This five-day workshop is offered to students who have completed Deep Tissue I. Subjects will include: Specific treatments for the feet, ankles and legs including the abductors, IT band, knee, quadriceps and psoas muscles and treatments to address the rotators of the hip, and the diaphragm. Techniques for the back, arms, rotator cuff and chest, anterior and posterior thoracic outlet; fascia/muscles of the skull and external muscles associated with the TMJ. Soft tissue strategies and rehabilitation techniques for the injuries frequently encountered in a professional massage practice including common injuries to the ankle, knee, hamstrings, rotator cuff, tendonitis of the elbow and overuse injuries of the wrist. Prerequisite: 100-hr massage certification and Deep Tissue I completion. Bring two sheets to class. Cost: $575.00 REFLEXOLOGY • Instructor: Vicky Kennedy, CMT Saturday – Sunday April 5 & 6, from 10am - 6 pm, 14 Credit Hours: Reflexology is a truly holistic and non-invasive therapy that can be used alone or easily integrated into a full body massage. Students will learn the principles of Reflexology and the holistic concept, its ability to relieve stress and tension, improve blood supply, release toxins and promote the flow of nerve impulses. Students will leave this class with a comfortable ability with the hands on techniques and will be able to provide a complete reflexology session for their clients. Cost: $ 230.00 ORTHO-BIONOMY© • Instructor: Jim Berns, Registered Advanced Ortho-Bionomy Instructor Saturday - Sunday, May 3 & 4, from 9am to 6pm, 16 Credit Hours: Ortho-Bionomy is a unique body therapy. It uses gentle and comfortable positioning of the clients body to facilitate the release of pain and tension. It is incredibly effective for those “hard-to-release” places in the body. Ortho-Bionomy is completely painless for the client AND for the practitioner. It deeply integrates the mind / body connection. Massage therapists often feel constrained by the different dynamics of working with a seated and fully dressed client. This one day workshop will introduce students to the techniques, applications, and benefits of chair massage and remove the limitations of a massage chair by demonstrating a full body seated massage session. Students will also cover different timing formats and settings for chair massage gigs as well as techniques for attracting new table massage clients through chair sessions. A variety of massage chairs will be on hand for students to try during the workshop. Prerequisite: 70 -Hrs massage training. This class is designed to be immediately incorporated with present massage skills to allow you to work deeply, safely and with ease. INTRODUCTION TO ORTHOPEDIC: THE HENDRICKSON METHOD ® • Instructor: Randy Lind, CMT Saturday-Sunday May 17 & 18, from 9am - 6 pm, 16 Credit Hours: In this 2 day workshop we will be begin the journey into soft tissue and joint rehabilitation massage. If you are interested in eliminating painful symptoms and creating long term results in your clients’ conditions, while looking at the body as a more 3 dimensional dynamic system, this workshop is for you. The Hendrickson Method of orthopedic massage provides powerful assessment, massage and manual therapy techniques synthesized with Eastern energy practices. It is extraordinarily effective in treating many types of orthopedic conditions and is profoundly gentle both for the client as well as for the therapist. Cost: $230.00 PREGNANCY & POSTPARTUM MASSAGE • Instructors: Leah Kennedy, CMT & Nell Waters CMT, Doula Saturdays & Sundays May 31 & June 1, 7, & 8, from 10am- 6 pm, 28 Credit Hours: In this class you will learn the basic physiological and anatomical processes of pregnancy and postpartum. Students will learn to create safe and comfortable prenatal positioning, technique, contraindications and modifications of your existing hands on skills and labor massage. We will also address specific musculoskeletal concerns such as low back pain, as well as edema, leg cramps and shortness of breath. Prerequisite: 100-hr massage certification. Cost: $460.00 WORKING WITH THE CERVICAL SPINE AREA • Instructor: Marty Morales, CMT Saturday & Sunday, June 7 & 8, from 10am – 6pm, 14 Credit Hours; This two day workshop will take students deep into the intricate structural relationships of the muscles and the vertebrae of the cervical spine, how form and function influence one another, and how massage can positively support these and improve these relationships. Students will be given the skills to track down dysfunction in the cervical area and the techniques to work deeply and effectively with clients’ trouble spots in order to restore balance, relieve pain, and improve range of motion and overall function. Cost: $230.00 DYNAMIC STRETCHING AND MOBILIZATION • Instructor: Dr. Eric Rubin, DC, CMT Saturday – Sunday June 14 & 15, from 10am - 6 pm, 14 Credit Hours: Our bodies were designed to move. Modern life, however, is increasingly sedentary, limiting our natural types and ranges of motion and creating restriction in our bodies. Traditionally, massage is performed on a passive, static body rather than actively involving the client on the table. This one day intensive workshop is designed to give the therapist practical tools for actively engaging their clients in the process of opening their bodies from within. Topics will include visual assessment, contract/relax, PNF, reciprocal inhibition and practice integrating these dynamic approaches into the Swedish massage format. Knowing how to properly assess your client, create an effective action plan, and execute the work in a creative and engaging manner will allow you to stand out as a bodyworker. This two day intensive workshop will allow students to understand the structures that make up the lower leg ankle and foot and to effectively work the area. Students will explore hands on how form and function influence one another, and how bodywork can positively support and improve these relationships. The classes will provide tools and a framework to assist clients in preventing and minimizing the effects of injuries and overuse syndromes. This workshop will cover pre-event, post-event and training aspects of massage, and will approach common client injuries in a goal-oriented way while allowing a great deal of hands-on practice. Cost: $400.00 WOMEN'S ENERGY CYCLES FROM YOUTH TO SAGE: • Instructor: Rachel Johnson Saturday and Sunday, June 21 & 22 from 9:00am – 5:00pm, 14 credit hours: This workshops will provide a shiatsu perspective on treatment for women of all ages. Each stage of life presents specific challenges and opportunities for women’s energy to flow dynamically and healthfully. Lectures, demonstration and techniques presented will cover; TCM overview of women’s energy from menses to menopause, treatment around menstruation, understanding peri-menopause and response to symptoms, supporting women’s health after menopause and into older age, and recommendations for diet, self-help, and exercise. Prerequisite: 100 hours of certification in meridian based bodywork. Cost: $125 PARTNERS, PALS AND PAIRS MASSAGE • Instructor: Cynthia Bologna, MA, CMT Sunday, September 21, 2008, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Come join us at the San Francisco School of Massage for a fun day of massage! This workshop is designed for partners or friends who want to learn how to give each other a basic, one-hour massage. No previous massage experience is necessary. The course begins with a demonstration of basic massage strokes by the instructor, and includes ample practice time for participants. You will learn how to give and receive a relaxing, beneficial massage, working fully clothed either on a massage table, floor mat, or chair. Just bring yourselves! Tables, mats, chairs and pillows will be provided.
